Leash Laws on the Pet Friendly Gulf Coast :: St. George Island
Franklin County Ordinance No. 2001-24
An ordinance regulating animals in Franklin County, encouraging
humane and responsible animal ownership.
SECTION 2. DEFINITIONS:
RESTRAINT: A dog or cat shall be considered
under restraint if it is confined within the real property
limits of its owner or secured by a leash or lead or under
the direct control of a responsible person.
DIRECT CONTROL: Immediate, continuous physical
control of a dog at all times such as by means of a leash,
cord, secure fence, or chain of such strength to restrain
the dog and controlled by a person capable of restraining
the dog, or safe and secure restraint within a vehicle. If
the controlling person is at all times fully and clearly within
the unobstructed sight and hearing of the dog, voice control
shall be considered direct control.
SECTION 5: OWNER RESPONSIBILITY
All dogs shall be kept under restraint in any property zoned
residential or commercial.
No animal shall be allowed to cause a nuisance. The owner
of every dog or cat shall be held responsible for every behavior
of such dog or cat under the provisions of this ordinance.
ST. GEORGE ISLAND STATE PARK
Pets are permitted in designated day-use areas. They must
be kept on a hand-held leash that is six-feet or shorter and
be well-behaved at all times. Pet owners are required to pick
up after their pets and properly dispose of their droppings.
Pets are not permitted on beaches or playgrounds, the Youth
Camp or Primitive Camp, or in bathing areas, cabins, park
buildings, or concession facilities. Service animals are welcome
in all areas of the State Park.
SUBDIVISIONS AND ASSOCIATIONS: St. George
Plantation, Sunset Beach, 300 Ocean Mile, Villas of St. George
and other areas governed by owners’ associations have
specific rules and guidelines regarding pets. A Summary, although
association rules may vary, is full compliance with County
Leash Law (see above), and clean up is required after your
pet. Some associations may specify animals be kept on a leash.
